Our Young Pioneers Program
Elementary aged children join groups according to their ages, so their activities can be aligned to their age group’s learning abilities and interest levels.
They begin their day by singing along, moving their bodies, and listening to stories under the shade trees.
Next students explore the farm and visit three of six stations one week and the other three the following week. They will engage in observation, exploration, and age- appropriate lessons in the following areas:
·Learning Garden
Plant and soil studies, beneficials and pollinators--bugs, insects, birds, and animals, hands-on, beginner gardening/farming techniques in a garden or their own, observation, tending and harvesting, seasons, and weather studies
Farm Kitchen
Farm to Table process, food facts and nutritional information, food preparation and cooking, accurate measurement, following/creating recipes
Nature Walk
Observing nature around us, local flora and fauna identification, birding, foraging and uses of plants, nature art, weather, seasonal changes.
Tipi—Social Science, Language Arts
Past and present study of local flora, fauna, rocks and minerals, culture and daily life of the Luiseno Tribe who inhabited this land in the past and our culture today
Exploration and activities in our mock Luiseno Tribe Village which includes a Tipi (Kiicha), cooking on the play campfire, fishing in the creek, weaving, gathering acorns, creating cultural items of the Luiseno
Themed, nature, and STEAM based learning centers and sensory bins
Farm Animal Visits
Animal biology basics, proper care techniques
Nature based Art
Artistic expression projects using items from nature to display in class or take home
Older Elementary enjoy snack and then free time to explore, create, play games around the lower pond area. They end their day where they started, share a recap of the day, sing along and dancing before pick up.
